Critics of “seat time” typically argue that if credits are not based on some form of consistently applied learning standards, then it becomes difficult to determine what students have learned or failed to learn. Credits are one of the primary methods used to determine and document that students have met academic requirements, generally at the high school level. Credits are awarded upon completing and passing a course or required school program. Sometimes the area covered by the rules of a new standard must change to meet the new guidelines. Superseded standards provide information on how things used to be done, and provide valuable information when an older area of activity (like the capabilities of an old elevator or results from a lab using older reporting techniques) is being evaluated. ASTM International is one of the largest voluntary standards development organizations in the world. They develop technical standards for materials, products, systems, and services. ASTM Standards have an important role in the information infrastructure that guides design, manufacturing and trade in the global economy. The term student outcomes typically refers to either (1) the desired learning objectives or learning standards that schools and teachers want students to achieve, or (2) the educational, societal, and life effects that result from students being educated. A code of practice typically refers to a set of guidelines or recommendations for implementing the requirements outlined in a standard that users should adhere to in the performance of activities and might include guidance on ethical and other behaviors. In effect, it provides practical guidance on how to achieve compliance with the standard’s provisions. A code of practice might include additional details, examples, best practices, and methodologies that organizations can follow to effectively apply the requirements of the standard in their specific context.
